The Stand in the Yard

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the concrete yard of the Blackwood Correctional Facility, reflecting a harsh, blinding glare off the high barbed-wire fences. Chloe stood near the perimeter, her fingers lightly touching the cold steel links. In her bright orange jumpsuit, she felt completely exposed, but her mind was focused on one thing: the worn-out, white sneakers on her feet. To anyone else, they were trash. To Chloe, they were the only key to her survival and the truth behind her brother's suspicious death.

The heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots shattered her focus. Chloe looked up to see Bertha, the most feared inmate in the block, marching toward her. Bertha’s face was a mask of cold hostility, her massive frame casting a long shadow over Chloe. The yard fell into a tense, expectant silence as the other inmates backed away, sensing the impending violence.

Bertha stopped just inches away, her eyes drilling into Chloe's white sneakers. Without preamble, she spoke in a low, menacing rumble.

"Take off the sneakers. Right now."

Chloe’s heart hammered violently against her ribs, and beads of sweat began to form on her forehead. She knew that giving up the shoes meant giving up the micro-SD card hidden in the sole—the only evidence that could clear her name and expose the warden's criminal empire. She swallowed hard, looked Bertha dead in the eye, and spoke with unwavering resolve.

"No."

Before Chloe could react, Bertha lunged forward. She grabbed Chloe by the collar of her jumpsuit and slammed her violently against the chain-link fence. The metal rattled loudly as Bertha leaned in, her face inches from Chloe's.

"Take them off... or you're going to regret it," Bertha snarled.

Chloe stared back defiantly, refusing to show the terror consuming her from within.
