The rain fell in relentless sheets, washing over the cold pavement of the city block. Amelia Vance stood shivering, though not from the cold. Her charcoal wool coat was heavy with water, and her auburn hair clung to her cheeks. Behind her, a line of six security guards in immaculate black suits stood like statues, shielding her from the curious eyes of passersby. But Amelia only had eyes for the man sitting on the wet concrete curb before her.

His name was Owen, or at least, that was the name he had gone by on these streets for the last five years. His face was smudged with soot, his sandy hair tangled and wild. Yet, beneath the layers of neglect, Amelia recognized the sharp jawline and the thin, distinct scar cutting through his left eyebrow. It was a scar she had traced with her fingers a thousand times in another life.

A Desperate Proposal

Amelia slowly sank to her knees, ignoring the dirty puddles soaking through her expensive trousers. With trembling hands, she produced a navy blue velvet box. Inside lay a flawless, three-carat diamond ring. "Marry me," she pleaded, her voice cracking under the weight of her desperation.

Owen stared at the glittering jewel, then up at the elegant woman kneeling before him. His deep blue eyes were filled with confusion.

"Why me?"
he rasped, his voice rough and unused.
"I'm nobody. I have nothing."

Amelia pulled off her dark sunglasses, letting him see the tears streaming down her face.

"Please, only you can help me,"
she whispered. But as Owen’s soiled fingers reached out to touch the cold metal of the ring, a black luxury SUV screeched to a halt beside them, splashing muddy water over the curb. A harsh, commanding voice cut through the storm: "Amelia, stop!" It was her stepbrother, Julian. Hearing the voice, Owen's eyes widened in sudden, agonizing recognition.
"This name..."
he muttered. Julian screamed,
"Don't let him remember!"
and Owen clutched his head, screaming in terror as fractured memories began to pierce his mind.
