The Shocking Encounter

The airport concourse was a chaotic symphony of rolling suitcases, loud announcements, and rushing travelers. Sarah held her seven-year-old son Leo’s hand tightly, navigating the sea of people. She had only turned her head for a fleeting second to check the flight departure board, but when she looked down, Leo’s hand was gone. Panic, cold and sharp, immediately seized her chest. She spun around, her eyes scanning the crowded terminal, calling his name in a voice laced with rising dread.

Then, she saw him. Leo was standing near a large concrete pillar, completely frozen. He was staring at another young boy who had stopped right in front of him. Sarah rushed forward, but as she drew closer, her steps faltered. Her breath caught in her throat, and the world seemed to tilt on its axis. The boy standing opposite her son was a mirror image of Leo.

The child had the exact same auburn hair, the same delicate facial structure, and the same deep-set eyes. However, while Leo was clean-cut, wearing a neat beige cardigan and polished shoes, this boy was covered in dried mud. His clothes were tattered, oversized garments that looked as though they had been pulled from a dumpster. He looked exhausted, terrified, and painfully thin.

'Wait... Why do you look like me? I thought I was the only one,'

Leo asked, his voice echoing with innocent confusion. Sarah fell to her knees, tears instantly spilling down her cheeks.

'Rowan! Oh my god, where are you?'

she cried out, her voice cracking with raw emotion. She reached out, her hands trembling violently. Leo pointed at the boy, looking at his mother.

'Mom, why does he have my same face?'

Sarah couldn't speak. Her eyes drifted to the boy's neck, where a thick, dirty cord was tied. Hanging from it was a heavy, rusted metal tag. With trembling fingers, she lifted the cold metal. Scratched into the surface were two words that shattered her reality: BABY #2. Sarah gasped, her terrified face revealing her absolute horror as she whispered,

'Oh no...'
