The fluorescent lights of Oakridge High’s main hallway hummed with their usual chaotic energy. Toby adjusted his heavy backpack, cradling a stack of chemistry papers and textbooks against his chest. He kept his head down, hoping to blend into the sea of students rushing past the rows of forest-green lockers. But blending in was impossible when you were the designated target of the school's golden boy.

Without warning, a solid shoulder collided with Toby's chest. The sheer force of the impact sent him crashing to the polished tile floor. His textbooks slammed down, and weeks of meticulous research papers scattered like autumn leaves in the wind. Toby’s wire-rimmed glasses slid across the floor, coming to a halt near a pair of pristine white sneakers.

The Hallway Confrontation

Laughter erupted from the surrounding crowd. Toby looked up to see Derek, the star quarterback, standing over him. Derek wore his bright red varsity jacket like a suit of armor, his face twisted into a smug, arrogant grin. Around him, several classmates immediately pulled out their smartphones, lenses pointed at Toby to capture his public humiliation.

"Watch where you're going, loser," Derek sneered, kicking a stray paper aside. "Or maybe you need stronger glasses."

But instead of scrambling to gather his things in shame as he usually did, Toby remained still. A strange, heavy silence settled over his mind, drowning out the mocking laughter. Slowly, he reached out and picked up his glasses. He didn't put them back on. Instead, he folded them carefully and set them on a nearby bench.

Toby stood up. His movements were fluid, devoid of the clumsy panic everyone expected. He reached for the hem of his dark green crewneck sweatshirt and began to roll up his sleeve. As the fabric retracted, it revealed a thick, professional black fighter's hand wrap, bound tightly around his knuckles and wrist. He did the same to his other arm. The crowd’s laughter died instantly. Toby stepped forward, locking his intense, fearless gaze onto Derek’s suddenly wide eyes.
