A Sudden Encounter at O'Hare

The transit hall of O'Hare International Airport was a chaotic sea of rushing travelers, rolling suitcases, and overhead boarding announcements. Sarah clutched her purse, momentarily distracted as she retrieved their boarding passes from the service desk. She had only let go of her six-year-old son Leo's hand for a single fraction of a second. But when she turned around, the space beside her was empty.

"Leo?" she called out, her voice tight with rising panic. She pushed through the dense crowd, her pink blazer standing out against the sea of dark winter coats. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she scanned the terminal, desperately searching for his bright blond hair and dark blue sweater.

Then, near the baggage claim terminal, she saw him. Leo had stopped dead in his tracks, staring in absolute bewilderment at another child who had stopped right in front of him. Sarah ran toward them, but as she drew closer, the breath caught in her throat. The other boy was Leo's identical mirror image. He had the same nose, the same deep blue eyes, and the same messy blond hair. But while Leo was clean and well-dressed, this boy was covered in smudges of dirt, wearing tattered rags that were far too large for him.

The camera of a bystander captured the raw, candid moment. Leo looked at the boy and whispered,

"Wait... Why do you look like me? I thought I was the only one."

Sarah finally reached them, tears streaming down her face. A name she had buried deep in her soul for six years escaped her lips.

"Rowan! Oh my god, where are you?"
She stopped in absolute shock, her hands trembling. Leo pointed at the dirty child and asked,
"Mom, why does he have my same face?"

Gasping, Sarah fell to her knees. Her eyes locked onto a rusted metal tag hanging from a dirty piece of twine around the boy's neck. She reached out and lifted it. Stamped into the cold, rusted surface were the words: BABY #2. A terrifying wave of realization washed over her.

"Oh no..."
she whispered, staring into the eyes of the son she was told had died at birth.
