The Warning on the Lawn

The afternoon sun beat down on the manicured lawns of the Vance estate, but the warmth did nothing to ease the sudden, icy chill that had just swept over Arthur. At sixty-two, Arthur was a man accustomed to control. As the blades of his private helicopter spun to a deafening roar, preparing to whisk him and his beautiful wife, Eleanor, away for their fifth anniversary, he felt a deep sense of accomplishment. Eleanor stood beside him, looking radiant in a designer dress and oversized sunglasses, her smile flawless as she held his hand.

Suddenly, the peaceful atmosphere was shattered. Out from the shadow of the stables ran Toby, the estate’s twenty-three-year-old stable hand. His appearance was shocking; his white shirt was torn, his straw hat sat crookedly on his head, and a stream of fresh blood smeared his face from a badly bruised nose. He stumbled across the grass, gasping for breath, desperate to reach them before it was too late.

"Sir, sir! Don't get on that helicopter, your wife put a bomb inside!" Toby gasped, his voice cracking with sheer terror.

Arthur froze, his hand slipping from Eleanor’s grasp. The accusation was so absurd, so monstrous, that his mind struggled to process it. He looked at Eleanor, expecting her to laugh off the ridiculous claim. Instead, her face hardened into a mask of pure fury. She stepped forward, her elegant posture stiffening as she glared down at the disheveled young man.

"But what on earth are you saying, crazy boy? Go back to the stables where you belong!" she snapped, her voice dripping with venom.

Toby didn't back down. He fell to his knees, looking up at Arthur with pleading, tear-filled eyes. "If you don't believe me, sir, ask her to get on the helicopter with you right now," he begged. In that tense, frozen second, Arthur turned his gaze to his wife. As their eyes locked, the silence between them became far louder than the roaring helicopter blades.
