The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a glittering sea of diamond necklaces, champagne flutes, and hushed, polite laughter. For Elena, however, it felt like a gilded cage. She stood near the edge of the dance floor, her blonde hair swept back into a sleek, elegant ponytail. She wore a modest, beautifully tailored white silk shirt and a flowing skirt—a stark contrast to the extravagant, low-cut gowns worn by the other women of high society. Elena had always kept herself covered, harboring a secret she hoped would never see the light of day.

Her husband, Richard, a wealthy real estate mogul in his sixties, stood nearby, boasting to a group of investors. He barely glanced at Elena, treating her more like an accessory than a wife. Suddenly, a shadow fell over her. It was Evelyn, Richard’s bitter ex-fiancée, clad in a shimmering gold silk gown. Evelyn had spent months trying to find a way to humiliate Elena and reclaim her spot at Richard's side.

"You think you belong here, don't you?" Evelyn whispered maliciously. "But you're just a nobody."

Before Elena could step back, Evelyn reached out with venomous speed and grabbed the collar of Elena's white silk shirt. With a violent, tearing sound, she ripped the fabric down Elena's back. The ballroom fell dead silent. Exposed to the entire crowd were large, thick, stitched cross scars covering Elena’s shoulder blades and upper spine.

"Look at her!" Evelyn shrieked, pointing mockingly. "She's nothing but scars! She's a monster!"

The crowd murmured in disgust and shock. Elena felt a cold wave of humiliation wash over her. She looked at Richard, pleading for help, but his face held only embarrassment. Desperate to protect his reputation, Richard stepped forward and barked, "Security, get her out of here!"

But before the guards could touch her, the massive double doors of the ballroom swung open. General Vance, a highly decorated military officer, marched inside. Walking straight past the stunned elite, he stopped before Elena, stood at rigid attention, and saluted. "Captain Sterling, welcome home," he announced, leaving the room in stunned silence.
