The Ghost in the Desert

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty firing range, casting harsh shadows across the arid landscape. Thomas, a sixty-six-year-old veteran with cropped silver hair and a weathered face, walked with a steady, quiet confidence toward the registration table. He wore a faded olive-drab field jacket, a stark contrast to the high-tech, modern gear of the active-duty soldiers surrounding him. To them, he looked like an old man who had lost his way in the desert.

Standing near the rustic wooden table was Jack, a thirty-four-year-old captain known for his flawless record and his equally massive ego. Dressed in dark grey combat gear, Jack watched Thomas’s approach with a smug, mocking smile. He crossed his arms, looking down at the older man.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?" Jack asked, his voice dripping with condescension.

A few younger soldiers nearby chuckled, but Thomas remained silent. He reached out to sign the tournament roster, pulling back his sleeve just enough to reveal a stark, black wolf tattoo etched into his forearm. Jack’s eyes flickered to the ink, his smile faltering for a brief second before he dismissed it with a loud laugh. He didn't believe the legends.

Thomas picked up a standard-issue scoped sniper rifle, stepping up to the firing line. The target was set at an almost impossible distance, obscured by the shimmering heat waves. Jack stood behind him, waiting for the old man to humiliate himself. Thomas took a single, calm breath.

"I only need one shot," Thomas whispered.

The rifle cracked, a deafening sound that echoed through the canyon. A moment later, the target system chimed, confirming a perfect bullseye. Jack’s face drained of color. He stood in pure disbelief, stammering, "What? Impossible!" as a single tear of shock rolled down his cheek. From the shadows, the base commander stepped forward, staring at Thomas's arm. "That is the mark of the ghost unit," he murmured, his voice filled with awe.

he murmured, his voice filled with awe.
