A Ghost on the Shore

The sun-drenched beach was alive with the sound of crashing turquoise waves and the laughter of families, but for Clara, the beauty of the day was bittersweet. Holding the hand of her six-year-old daughter, Lily, she watched the sparkling water, her mind drifting to the husband she had lost five years ago. Mark had been her rock, her soulmate, until a tragic boating accident tore him away, leaving his body lost to the depths of the ocean. Since then, Clara had struggled to raise Lily alone, supported only by Mark's younger brother, Julian.

"Mom, look, it's dad!" Lily suddenly squealed, pointing a tiny finger toward the surf.

Clara’s heart seized. She looked down at her daughter’s excited face, her own eyes immediately filling with tears. She knelt down, gently grabbing Lily's shoulders. "No, sweetheart," she whimpered, her voice cracking with a pain that never truly faded. "You know your dad died years ago. We talked about this."

"Mom, look at his tattoo!" she insisted, pointing again at a muscular man wading out of the ocean.

Clara turned her gaze toward the stranger. He was tall, drenched in seawater, his physique strikingly familiar. As the water receded around his waist, the bright sunlight illuminated a large, intricate tattoo on his abdomen. Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. It was a detailed portrait of her own face, framed by wild roses—a custom piece Mark had gotten to celebrate their anniversary. It was a one-of-a-kind tribute that no stranger could possibly replicate.

"That's impossible," Clara whispered, her knees trembling. The man turned, his green eyes locking onto hers. He opened his arms wide. Without another thought, Clara grabbed Lily's hand, and together they ran through the wet sand, plunging into the surf toward the man who had returned from the dead.
