The Burning Canyon

The heat in the desert canyon was suffocating, thick with the acrid stench of burning metal and spent ammunition. Sergeant Chris Miller coughed violently, his vision obscured by the dense black smoke billowing from the wreckage of the lead armored vehicle. Just moments ago, an ambush had shattered the silence of their patrol. Now, the chaotic sounds of distant gunfire echoed off the high stone walls as Chris scrambled through the dirt toward a makeshift triage area.

There, beneath the shadow of a crumbling cliff, lay a wounded soldier. It was the driver who had heroically steered the burning vehicle away from the rest of the convoy before it exploded. Her helmet had been knocked away, revealing matted strawberry blonde hair stained with dust and blood. Mark, the unit medic, was already kneeling over her, his red-cross helmet splattered with mud as he worked frantically to stem the flow of blood from a deep shrapnel wound in her torso.

"Stay with me, don't you dare fade now!" Chris pleaded, kneeling beside her and grabbing her cold hand.

The soldier’s breathing was shallow, her pale lips parting slightly as she gasped for air. Mark’s hands were slick with blood as he applied a pressure dressing, his expression grim. He looked up at Chris, his eyes wide with panic.

"Massive blood loss! She won't last, hold her steady!" Mark yelled over the roaring wind of an approaching rescue helicopter.

Chris held her shoulders, his heart pounding in his chest. The gravity of the situation pressed down on him. This brave woman had sacrificed herself for them.

"She, she saved all of us..." Chris stammered, his voice cracking with emotion.

As he leaned closer to keep her steady, Chris used his thumb to gently wipe a streak of dark soot from her temple. The harsh desert light caught her face, and Chris froze. Just below her left ear was a small, crescent-shaped scar. His breath hitched in his throat as his mind raced back to a childhood backyard in Ohio, to a little girl falling off a swing. His eyes widened in sudden, shocked recognition.

"Wait, this can't be... it's her!" he whispered, his world spinning.
