The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the busy Seattle sidewalk, radiating heat off the concrete. Julia, a thirty-two-year-old physical therapist, was walking home from her shift when a faint, distressing sound caught her attention. It was a weak, muffled whimper coming from a dark blue station wagon parked along the curb. Stepping closer, Julia pressed her face against the tinted window. Her heart leapt into her throat. Inside the sweltering vehicle, a tiny baby boy was buckled into a car seat, his face flushed a deep crimson, drenched in sweat.

A Critical Decision

The doors were locked, and the windows were rolled up tight. Knowing that every passing second inside the greenhouse-like car was a threat to the infant's life, Julia didn't hesitate. She looked around frantically, spotted a heavy, jagged rock near a nearby tree planter, and grabbed it with both hands. With a sharp breath, she slammed the rock against the front passenger window. The glass shattered instantly into a glittering web of pieces.

Julia quickly reached inside, unlocked the door, and scrambled into the backseat. She gently pulled the sobbing, overheated infant into her arms, cradling him against her maroon t-shirt. She rocked him back and forth, trying to soothe his frantic breathing.

"It's okay. You're safe now,"
she whispered, her own voice trembling with emotion.

Suddenly, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed on the pavement. A young woman with straight black hair, wearing a bright yellow sundress, ran up to the car, her face pale with shock. It was Megan, the baby's mother. Seeing the shattered glass, Megan shrieked,

"What did you do to my car?"

Julia looked up from the backseat, her eyes blazing with fierce protective instinct.

"Your baby was locked inside,"
she responded firmly.

Megan stopped in her tracks, her defensive walls immediately going up as tears welled in her eyes.

"I was only gone a minute!"
she cried out. Julia stared back intensely, holding the whimpering baby close.
"He couldn't breathe,"
Julia stated flatly, leaving no room for excuses.
