The Awful Joke

The afternoon sun cut through the sterile blinds of Room 412, casting long, golden bars across the linoleum floor. Clara sat propped up in her hospital bed, the pale green gown feeling too large for her frail, oncology-ravaged frame. Beside her, the IV pole dripped its chemical cocktail in a slow, rhythmic cadence that had become the soundtrack of her life. She was only thirty-two, bald, and exhausted, but she was fighting. She was fighting because of David.

David, her husband of seven years, stood at the foot of her bed. He wore his favorite gray Henley shirt, but his usual warm demeanor was replaced by a tense, unreadable expression. In his hands, he clutched a thick manila folder. Across its cover, written in bold, unforgiving black marker, was a single word: DIVORCE.

Clara’s heart seized. The air left her lungs in a sharp gasp as she stared at the word. She looked up at David, her blue eyes wide with a mixture of terror and disbelief.

"David? What is this? Please tell me this is some kind of sick joke," she whispered, her voice cracking.

For a terrifying five seconds, David remained silent, his gaze locked onto hers. Then, suddenly, the stern lines on his face dissolved into a wide, familiar grin. He let out a soft chuckle and stepped forward, playfully tapping the heavy folder against her bald head.

"Gotcha!" he laughed, his voice filling the sterile room with warmth. "You really thought I’d let you go that easily?"

Clara let out a sob that instantly turned into a laugh. She doubled over, giggling hysterically as the crushing weight of panic lifted from her chest. David wrapped his arms around her neck, pulling her close, the manila folder still clutched in his hand. It was a classic David prank—dark, inappropriate, and designed to shock her out of her depression. She buried her face in his shoulder, feeling safe again.
