An Unfinished Chapter

The sun was high over the pristine lawns of the Oakridge Estate, casting a warm golden glow over what was supposed to be the perfect wedding. David stood at the altar, looking at his beautiful bride, Sarah, who was radiant in her off-the-shoulder white gown. Everything was going exactly as planned. The rustic floral archway framed them beautifully, and their families smiled warmly from the front rows. It was the moment they had spent over a year preparing for, a culmination of all their dreams.

But just as the priest began to speak the opening blessings, the soft classical music abruptly cut out. A collective murmur of confusion rippled through the gathered guests. David turned toward the back of the venue, expecting a minor technical glitch, but his breath caught in his throat. Walking slowly down the aisle was a woman who didn't belong here. She wore a glittering, wine-red evening gown that stood out sharply against the pastel and white decor of the wedding. It was Elise, David’s ex-girlfriend from six years ago, whom he had never expected to see again.

Between them, holding her hands, were two young, fair-haired girls in pale pink satin dresses. They couldn't have been more than five years old. As they drew closer, David’s heart hammered violently against his ribs. The girls shared his sandy blonde hair, his high cheekbones, and his bright blue eyes. The resemblance was undeniable and utterly terrifying.

Sarah gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as she stepped back. The entire crowd was frozen in absolute shock. David stepped forward, his voice barely a whisper as he gestured to the little girls.

"Elise. Who are they?"

Elise stopped at the base of the altar. She looked him dead in the eyes, her expression a mix of physical exhaustion and fierce, maternal determination.

"Your daughters," she said firmly.

The words hung in the warm afternoon air, shattering the perfect day in an instant and leaving the entire assembly in stunned, breathless silence.
