My Husband Said My Mother's House Was Empty, But My Toddler Saw Someone
The Shadows of the Past
The afternoon sun filtered through the dusty lace curtains of my late mother’s living room, casting long, skeletal shadows across the hardwood floor. It had been three months since she passed, and the house still smelled of her favorite lavender tea and old paper. The silence was heavy, broken only by the soft ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner. Surrounding us were her beloved antique dolls, their porcelain faces staring blankly from the glass cabinets. My husband, Mark, had insisted the house was a useless money pit and urged me to sell it immediately. Yet, standing here, I couldn't bring myself to let go of the only piece of my childhood I had left.
I sat in the worn velvet armchair, watching my two-year-old daughter, Lily, play on the floral rug. She was the spitting image of my mother, with her curly red hair and bright, curious eyes. Despite the warmth of the sun, a sudden, inexplicable chill swept through the room. I looked up, my eyes instinctively drawn to the glass doors that opened to the overgrown backyard. A dark silhouette seemed to linger just beyond the frosted pane, shifting slightly before vanishing into the shadows of the oak trees.

My heart leaped into my throat. "Look over there, Lily," I whispered, my voice trembling as I pointed toward the glass doors.
Lily stopped playing and stood up, her small hands clutching her white dress. She looked confused, her gaze tracking my finger.
"Is someone there, Mommy?"she softly asked, her innocent voice echoing in the quiet room. I stood up, grabbing her hand, my mind racing with fear. There was no reason for anyone to be on the property. Mark had assured me he had locked every door and window weeks ago. But as I approached the glass, I saw fresh, muddy footprints on the porch, leading directly to the side entrance. Someone was not only watching us—they were living in my mother's house.
