A Sunny Day Turned Nightmare

The afternoon had started with the kind of perfect, golden sunlight that makes every parent feel a sense of peace. My five-year-old son, Leo, was running toward the bright yellow slide, his laughter echoing across the park. He was a gentle boy, always careful to wait his turn, which made what happened next all the more devastating.

I was sitting on a wooden bench nearby when a little girl in a floral dress climbed up the slide's steps right behind Leo. At the bottom of the slide stood her mother, a woman named Melissa, who wore a denim jacket and kept her arms crossed. Her expression was cold, watching her daughter climb with a strange intensity. Before I could even register the danger, the little girl reached the top and gave Leo a violent, deliberate shove.

Leo fell backward, tumbling down the slide and hitting his forehead against the metal railing before landing hard on the grass. A sharp, terrified scream ripped from his throat. I bolted from the bench, my heart hammering in my chest as I rushed to his side. When I gathered him in my arms, my hands immediately became slick with blood. A deep gash had opened on his forehead, and he was sobbing hysterically.

Trembling, I looked up at Melissa, expecting her to run over, apologize, or offer a tissue. Instead, she stood frozen in the exact same spot, her arms still crossed, looking down at us with complete indifference.

"Your kid is too soft,"
she said coldly, her voice devoid of any empathy.
"Kids play rough. Get over it."

Anger flared through my veins, hot and sharp. "Your daughter pushed him!" I yelled, pressing my sleeve against Leo's forehead to stem the flow of blood. "He is bleeding! How can you stand there and say that?" Melissa merely sneered, refusing to take responsibility. Realizing I was dealing with someone completely devoid of a conscience, I pulled out my phone and dialed 911, demanding both an ambulance and the police.
