An Unexpected Encounter

The grand lobby of the hotel was a symphony of clinking champagne flutes, soft piano music, and the low hum of high-society chatter. Edward adjusted the cuffs of his dark blue blazer, offering a polite smile to a passing business associate. Beside him, Clara looked radiant in her cream-colored evening gown, her diamond necklace catching the light of the massive crystal chandeliers. Tonight was supposed to be their night—a celebration of their upcoming merger and marriage.

But the elegant atmosphere shattered when a small, trembling figure rushed past the towering marble pillars. A boy, no older than seven, wearing an oversized olive green sweater that hung loosely over his frail frame, sprinted toward them. Tears streamed down his pale cheeks, and his chest heaved with desperate sobs.

"Please, don't let them throw me out!" the boy cried, reaching out to grab the edge of Edward's blazer.

Edward instinctively stepped back, his expression hardening. He looked down at the child with a mixture of confusion and stern authority. Beside him, Clara took a step away, her nose wrinkling in distaste as she looked at the boy's dusty sneakers on the pristine carpet.

"Who are you? Why are you following us?" Edward asked, his voice echoing in the vast lounge.

The boy didn't flinch. Instead, he reached into the pocket of his oversized sweater and pulled out a tattered, faded photograph. His tiny hands shook violently as he held it up toward Edward's face.

"My mom said if I said Tiny, you would remember her," the boy sobbed, his eyes wide with desperate hope.

The word struck Edward like a physical blow. Tiny. It was a secret, deeply personal nickname from a lifetime ago. Edward snatched the photograph, his eyes scanning the faded image. It was a picture of a young woman laughing in a field of wildflowers. His breath caught in his throat.

"No... That's Emily," Edward whispered, his face turning pale.

Clara gasped beside him, her hand flying to her mouth as she stared at the photograph, then at the crying boy, realizing the perfect illusion of their evening was about to crumble.
