Previously: When Admiral Caroline walked down the aisle, she expected a peaceful wedding. Instead, her estranged father appeared with a dark secret that forced her to choose between duty and family.

The Secret in the Envelope

Edward did not return the salute. Instead, he stepped closer, violating the formal distance required by protocol. He reached slowly into the inner pocket of his dark dress uniform and pulled out a heavy, weathered leather envelope. His hands, once steady enough to guide battleships, trembled slightly as he held it out to her.

"I didn't come here to cause a scene, Caroline," Edward whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I came to give you this before they find me. You need to know the truth."

Caroline kept her salute raised for a second longer before slowly lowering her arm, her fingers brushing against the cold leather of the envelope. "What truth, Edward? You left us. You let Mom die alone while you chased promotions," she whispered back, the old anger flaring up despite her efforts to remain professional.

"I had to make them believe I didn't care about you," Edward revealed, his eyes locked onto hers with desperate sincerity. "I discovered a massive conspiracy involving stolen defense intelligence at the highest levels of the Pentagon. When they realized I knew, they threatened to target you and your mother. The only way to keep you safe was to make myself a pariah, to alienate you completely so they would never use you as leverage."

Caroline’s world shattered. The decades of resentment she had carried suddenly felt like a carefully constructed lie. But before she could ask another question, the heavy oak doors of the cathedral burst open. The sudden rush of wind blew out the candles near the entrance.

Several armed federal operatives in tactical gear flooded the aisle, led by Deputy Director Vance, a powerful civilian official Caroline knew all too well. Vance stepped forward, a cold, triumphant smile on his face as his men aimed their weapons directly at the retired officer.

"Admiral Caroline, step away from the fugitive," Vance ordered, his voice echoing under the high gothic arches. "Edward is under arrest for high treason. Do not interfere."
