Previously: When Admiral Lawrence spotted a young woman in a utility jacket on his naval base, a single tense exchange forced a twenty-year-old family secret to finally float to the surface.

A Father's Duty

Lawrence looked from his daughter’s pale, brave face to the man he had trusted for three decades. He realized in an instant that Vance’s personal guards were mercenaries, and that if Jessica was taken from this room, she would never be seen alive again. The trap was sprung, but Lawrence was not a man to surrender without a fight.

Maintaining his calm, military composure, Lawrence stepped between Vance and Jessica. He knew that the interrogation room was equipped with a state-of-the-art security feed, directly linked to the base's main operations center. With a subtle movement of his hand behind his back, Lawrence activated the room's emergency broadcast switch—a feature reserved for hostage situations that fed the audio directly to the base-wide PA system.

"You wanted her dead twenty years ago, didn't you, Vance?" Lawrence asked, keeping his voice steady and clear. "You staged the ferry disaster to eliminate my family because Sarah discovered your black-market arms smuggling."

Vance laughed, a dry, arrogant sound that echoed through the speakers across the entire naval base. "Your wife was too smart for her own good, Lawrence. And now, your daughter has inherited her bad habit of asking questions. Yes, I cleaned up the mess then, and I will clean it up now. No one will ever believe an old, broken Admiral over me."

Before Vance could order his mercenaries to fire, the heavy steel doors of the brig area burst open. A dozen heavily armed naval security officers, led by Chief Miller, flooded the room, their weapons trained directly on Vance and his men. Having heard the entire confession broadcasted across the base, the security team didn't hesitate to disarm Vance's mercenaries and place the corrupt Vice Admiral under arrest.

As Vance was dragged away in chains, the heavy weight of twenty years of grief finally lifted from Lawrence's shoulders. He stepped forward and quickly unlocked his daughter’s handcuffs. Throwing his arms around her, he held her tight, tears streaming down his face.

"I never stopped loving you, Jessica," he whispered. "We have a lot of lost time to make up for."

Family is a bond that no amount of time, distance, or betrayal can ever truly sever.
