Previously: When Admiral Edward spotted a young woman in a black jacket on his secure navy base, he expected an intruder. Instead, her response forced the decorated officer to offer a solemn salute.

A Trap in the Dark

Admiral Edward guided Megan through the maze of corridors to his private, soundproofed office. The moment the heavy oak door clicked shut, the heavy silence of the military command room enveloped them. Edward turned to her, his face etched with deep worry.

"Megan, what on earth are you doing here?" he demanded, his voice hushed but intense. "Your mother thinks you are analyzing data in Virginia. If the people behind these leaks find out who you really are, they won't hesitate to eliminate you."

Megan pulled an encrypted tablet from her jacket. "The leaks are coming from inside your inner circle, Admiral," she said, handing him the screen. "Classified submarine patrol routes have been sold to foreign adversaries. I am here because you are the only one I can trust. We need to set a trap."

Edward studied the data, his jaw tightening as he realized the depth of the betrayal. "We will feed them false coordinates," he agreed. "I will authorize a high-security transmission. That will force the mole to act."

But before they could draft the transmission, the overhead fluorescent lights suddenly flickered and died. The hum of the ventilation system fell silent, leaving the room in pitch darkness. Megan's instincts screamed. This wasn't a routine power outage; the emergency backup generators should have kicked in instantly.

The heavy brass handle of the office door slowly turned. The lock clicked open. A figure stepped into the dim light filtering through the window blinds, holding a silenced pistol. It was Lieutenant Commander Vance, Edward's trusted chief of staff.

"I must admit, Megan, you played your part well," Vance sneered, aiming the weapon directly at her chest. "But your little investigation ends today. You and the Admiral are going to write a very convincing suicide note confessing to the treason, and then I will clean up the mess."
