Previously: When Melissa rushed her non-breathing newborn to the ER, she expected a medical miracle. Instead, the doctor froze in absolute shock, recognizing a dark secret that threatened to tear her life apart.

The Ghost in the ER

While Martha's quick actions stabilized Toby’s breathing, Dr. Robert Vance slowly backed out of the trauma room, his eyes never leaving the child. Once Toby was safely transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit, Dr. Vance cornered Melissa in a quiet, dimly lit consultation room. His chest rose and fell rapidly, his professional composure entirely shattered.

"Where did you get that baby, Melissa?"

he asked, his voice a low, trembling whisper. Melissa took a step back, defensive and frightened. "I adopted him legally through the Cradle of Hope Agency," she replied, clutching her damp blazer tightly around herself. "What is going on? Why did you freeze like that?"

Dr. Vance pulled out his wallet, his fingers shaking so much he almost dropped it. He pulled out a crumpled photograph and handed it to her. Melissa looked down and gasped. The baby in the photo was the spitting image of Toby, down to the exact same crescent-shaped birthmark below the left ear.

"This is my son, Liam," Dr. Vance whispered, tears welling in his eyes. "My ex-wife told me he died during childbirth three months ago at the St. Jude clinic. She refused to let me see him, claimed she had him cremated, and disappeared the next day. But that birthmark... it is a rare hereditary trait. Toby is my son."

Melissa felt the ground drop beneath her feet. The agency she had paid tens of thousands of dollars to had assured her Toby was surrendered by a young mother who couldn't care for him. Suddenly, the heavy wooden door of the consultation room flew open. A sharp-looking woman in an expensive coat stepped in, flanked by two security guards. It was Mrs. Gable, the director of the adoption agency, and she looked furious.
