Previously: A cocky young shooter mocks a 74-year-old woman at a local range, but when she fires a perfect round and signs her real name, a shocking past is finally revealed.

The Ghost of the Past

The atmosphere in the lobby shifted instantly from tense competition to stunned disbelief. Amos, his hands trembling slightly, held the registration sheet as if it were a sacred relic. "You're Mildred Vance," Amos said, his voice carrying across the quieted room. "The Olympic gold medalist who vanished in 1984 after the tragedy at the national trials."

A collective murmur rippled through the crowd. Landon looked from Mildred to Amos, his face pale. The smugness was entirely gone, replaced by the humiliating realization that he had just insulted a living legend of the sport. But Mildred’s attention was captured by Amos's next words.

"Mildred, you don't know what happened after you left,"
Amos whispered, stepping out from behind the counter.
"The man who sponsored Landon... the man who runs this entire academy... he built his fortune on your brother Arthur's stolen designs. He claimed Arthur committed suicide out of shame, but we all know Arthur would never have given up his patents."

Before Mildred could process the shocking revelation, the heavy glass doors of the facility swung open. A tall, silver-haired man in a tailored suit walked in, flanked by two assistants. It was Victor Sterling, the billionaire tycoon of the shooting sports industry and Landon’s personal sponsor. Forty years ago, Victor had been Arthur’s business partner—and the chief suspect in Mildred’s mind regarding her brother’s mysterious death.

Victor stopped dead in his tracks as his eyes met Mildred's. For a fraction of a second, absolute terror flashed across his polished features before he quickly masked it with a cold, superficial smile. "Mildred," Victor said, his voice smooth yet menacing. "I never expected to see you crawl out of hiding. But this tournament is for active professionals, not ghosts of the past. You don't belong here anymore."

Mildred stood tall, the fire in her eyes burning brighter than it had in decades.

"I belong exactly where Arthur's legacy was stolen,"
she replied.
"And I am going to take it back, target by target."
