The Final Bullet

The shootout began under the tense, bright lights of the range. A crowd had gathered, watching the clash between the young champion and the legendary ghost of the past.

Lincoln shot first. His focus was laser-sharp, his modern pistol firing with mechanical precision. He shot a spectacular ninety-eight out of one hundred, with eight bullseyes and two near-misses. He lowered his gun, chest heaving, a triumphant smirk returning to his face.

"Beat that, grandma,"

he whispered.

Mabel stepped up to the lane. She closed her eyes for a moment, letting the noise of the crowd fade away. She wasn't fighting Lincoln; she was fighting forty years of silence, pain, and stolen dignity.

She opened her eyes, raised her heavy pistol, and fired. Each shot was a perfect, rhythmic beat. By the eighth shot, the crowd was completely silent. Nine. Ten.

The target came back. Ten shots, ten absolute bullseyes. A perfect score of one hundred.

Just then, the double doors of the range swung open. An elderly man in a tailored suit walked in, flanked by assistants. It was Arthur Pendelton, Lincoln’s grandfather, who had come to watch his grandson practice. He stopped dead in his tracks as he saw Mabel standing by the lane. The color drained from Arthur's face.

"Mabel,"

Arthur whispered, looking as if he had seen a ghost.

Allan stepped forward, holding the target and the registration sheet.

"It’s over, Arthur,"

Allan said.

"She just shot a perfect hundred. And your grandson made a bet."

Lincoln looked between his grandfather and Mabel, his confidence shattering as he saw the sheer terror and guilt in Arthur’s eyes.

"Grandpa?"

Lincoln asked, his voice suddenly small.

"Is it true?"

Arthur couldn't look his grandson in the eye. Under the weight of the evidence and Mabel's resolute gaze, he finally bowed his head, whispering a confession that cleared her name after forty long years. Mabel lowered her weapon, a deep sense of peace washing over her. She didn't need revenge; she had her dignity back.

True talent and integrity can never be permanently erased by time.
