Previously: When Officer Davis pulled over a faded green sedan on a deserted highway, he thought he was dealing with an easy target. But cuffing the quiet old driver would ruin his career.

A Desperate Search

Ignoring the chill of unease, Davis marched over to the classic sedan. He popped the trunk and searched the interior, eventually spotting a worn leather briefcase on the front passenger seat. When he tried to open it, he found it secured with a heavy brass lock. Davis brought the briefcase back to the front of the car, shaking it in front of Arthur's face.

"What's in here, old man? Give me the key, or this gets a lot worse for you,"

Davis demanded.

Arthur simply smiled, a sad, knowing expression. Before Davis could press further, his shoulder radio crackled violently to life. It was Chief Miller, his voice strained and frantic, completely devoid of his usual calm demeanor.

"Davis! Tell me you haven't touched the driver of that green sedan yet!"

the Chief barked.

Davis pressed his mic button, a smug grin returning to his face.

"Already secured, Chief. I've got him in cuffs and I've recovered the briefcase."

There was a sudden, agonizing silence on the radio. When the Chief spoke again, his voice was trembling with pure panic.

"You absolute fool! Uncuff him right now! Do you have any idea who that is? That is Arthur Pendelton, the former State Attorney General and the man who literally appointed the federal oversight committee for our entire department!"

Davis froze, the blood completely draining from his face as he stared at the older man in the grey t-shirt. Arthur was not a criminal; he was the legendary prosecutor who had spent the last six months secretly investigating Chief Miller's department for corruption.

Before Davis could clumsily fumble for his handcuff keys, the roar of approaching engines echoed down the highway. Two unmarked black SUVs tore onto the shoulder, kicking up gravel as they surrounded the patrol car. Federal agents stepped out, their weapons drawn and aimed directly at Davis.
