Previously: When Lieutenant Derek tried to forcefully eject a quiet woman in a hoodie from the military mess hall, he had no idea she was the base's new commander.

The Unmasking of the Commander

Instead of releasing her, Derek sneered and tightened his grip, dragging Rachel backward out of the line. He was determined to make an example of her. "I don't care who you think you are," he barked, his voice dripping with condescension. "You are trespassing on active military ground, and I am removing you."

Rachel did not struggle against his physical strength. Instead, she reached into her pocket with her free hand, pulled out her phone, and dialed a direct number. "Sergeant Miller," she said calmly into the line, "bring the Military Police to the main mess hall immediately. We have an incident."

Derek let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Oh, you're calling the MPs? Go ahead, sweetheart. I'm an officer. They report to me. You're about to find out how real authority works." He crossed his arms, waiting smugly as the silent crowd of soldiers watched in mounting discomfort.

Less than three minutes later, the heavy double doors of the mess hall swung open. Sergeant Miller, a grizzled veteran with twenty years of service, marched in alongside two armed military police officers. Derek immediately stepped forward, his chest puffed out.

"Sergeant, thank God you're here," Derek said, pointing aggressively at Rachel. "This civilian is causing a disturbance, refusing to comply with orders, and threatening base personnel. Have her escorted off the premises immediately."

Sergeant Miller didn't even glance at Derek. He walked straight past the arrogant lieutenant, stopping exactly two feet in front of Rachel. In one swift, practiced motion, the Sergeant snapped his hand to his temple, delivering a crisp, flawless salute.

"Ma'am," Sergeant Miller announced, his voice booming through the silent room. "We did not expect you to arrive before the official briefing. Welcome to Fort Meade."

The smug grin on Derek's face froze, then slowly disintegrated. The blood drained from his cheeks, leaving him a ghostly, pale white. He looked at the saluting Sergeant, then at the quiet woman in the green hoodie.

"Sergeant... what is the meaning of this?" Derek stammered, his voice suddenly cracking. "She's just a civilian."

"This is Colonel Rachel Vance," Sergeant Miller replied, his eyes cutting like glass. "She is the newly appointed Base Commander, and your direct superior."
