Previously: When an arrogant military captain tried to humiliate a seemingly ordinary civilian in a crowded chow hall, he had no idea she held the power to destroy his entire career.

The Price of Arrogance

Ten minutes later, the heavy oak doors of the Base Commander’s office swung open. General Bradley, a decorated officer with a stern face, looked up from his desk. Captain Vance marched in behind Sarah, still trying to put on a brave face despite the sweat beads forming on his forehead. "General," Vance stammered, "we have a serious security breach. This civilian—"

General Bradley didn't let him finish. The moment his eyes fell on Sarah, he immediately stood up, came around his desk, and offered a crisp, respectful salute.

"Director Jenkins," General Bradley said warmly. "We were expecting you tomorrow morning. I apologize if your arrival wasn't properly accommodated."

Vance looked as if he might faint. "Director? General, she was in the chow hall... she didn't have a uniform..."

Sarah turned to face Vance, her expression ice-cold. "I don't need a uniform to do my job, Captain," she said. "I came to Fort Sterling a day early to investigate a massive discrepancy in our logistics budget. Specifically, the four million dollars in supply contracts that have vanished under your direct supervision over the last fiscal year."

She opened her folder and placed a stack of financial documents on the General’s desk. Every single page contained Vance's signature on fraudulent invoices.

"Your arrogance today only proved what the data already suggested," Sarah continued. "You believe this base is your personal fiefdom, and that you are above the law. You are mistaken."

General Bradley's face hardened as he looked over the evidence. He looked up at Vance with disgust. "Captain Vance, you are hereby relieved of your command, effective immediately. Military Police will escort you to your quarters until formal court-martial charges are filed."

As the MPs led a broken, silent Vance out of the office, Sarah finally set down her green tray on the side table. Power without integrity is nothing more than a temporary illusion, and those who abuse it will always find themselves brought down by the very truth they tried to hide.

The End
