Previously: When Sarah asked Thomas for a dance at a luxury charity gala, she expected a polite refusal. Instead, she uncovered a devastating secret that tied their pasts together forever.

The Shadows of the Past

As Sarah looked down at the man, a sudden, shocking jolt of recognition ran through her veins. The curve of his jaw, the deep blue of his eyes, and the faint, faded scar near his left temple—it all rushed back to her in a terrifying wave of memory. Five years ago, on a rain-slicked highway, her car had spun out of control, trapping her inside a burning wreck. A brave stranger had pulled her from the flames just seconds before the vehicle exploded, but a piece of flying debris had struck him down. She had never been allowed to see him in the hospital, his family shielding him from her completely.

"Thomas?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "It's you, isn't it? You're the one who saved me."

Thomas looked up, tears glistening in his eyes. "I didn't think you would remember me, Sarah," he said softly. "But yes, it's me."

Overwhelmed with emotion, Sarah knelt beside his wheelchair, completely ignoring the satin of her dress pooling on the dusty floor.

"I looked for you for years! Why did you disappear? Why didn't anyone let me thank you?"

Thomas sighed, looking away.

"My family... they were angry. The debris from the explosion damaged my spine. They blamed you for the fact that I would never walk again. My mother made sure you could never find us."

Before Sarah could process the crushing weight of guilt settling on her chest, a cold, sharp voice interrupted them.

"Get away from my son!"

Sarah spun around to find Eleanor, Thomas's mother, staring down at her with venomous hatred. Eleanor stepped between them, her face contorted in anger.

"You have a lot of nerve showing up here, Sarah. You took his legs, and now you come here to mock him? Have you no shame?"

The confrontation drew the attention of nearby guests, their whispers cutting through the music like knives as Sarah stood frozen under Eleanor's fierce gaze.
