Previously: When Lily was a barefoot, penniless child, a kind shoemaker gave her free shoes. Decades later, as a successful businesswoman, she tracks him down to save him from eviction.

The Search for Arthur

The search took less than forty-eight hours, but the report Lily received was devastating. Arthur’s beloved workshop had been demolished years ago to make way for a parking lot. He and Martha had been forced into a damp, freezing basement apartment on the rough outskirts of the city. Worse still, Arthur’s health had deteriorated rapidly, leaving them buried under a mountain of medical debt.

Lily didn't waste a single second. She ordered her driver to take her directly to the address. The rain poured heavily, matching the storm of emotions raging in her chest. As she descended the cracked concrete steps into the dark basement hallway, she heard a harsh, booming voice shouting cruel insults.

A burly, angry landlord was throwing old blankets and worn-out books into the wet hallway. Inside the cramped apartment, the elderly Martha was weeping, clutching a small, framed photo of her and Arthur in their youth. Arthur sat in a rickety wheelchair, looking incredibly frail, his once-bright eyes clouded with exhaustion and sorrow.

"I told you people yesterday, if you don't have the rent, you get out!" the landlord roared, grabbing a box of Arthur's old shoemaking tools. "I don't care if you're sick. This is a business, not a charity!"

Arthur reached out a trembling hand, trying to save his tools—the last remnants of his dignity.

"Please, sir," Arthur pleaded, his voice weak. "Just give us until the weekend. I am expecting a small pension payment. We have nowhere else to go."

The landlord laughed mockingly and raised his hand to shove the box into the hallway, nearly knocking Arthur's wheelchair over. Lily’s blood boiled. She stepped out of the shadows, her heels clicking sharply against the cold concrete floor, her presence instantly demanding attention.

"Touch him again, and I will ensure you spend the rest of your life in a courtroom," Lily said, her voice icy and commanding.

Lily said, her voice icy and commanding.
