Previously: When 18-year-old Cody stopped to help an injured biker on a foggy road, he never expected to find a connection to his own mysterious past—and a father he never knew.

The Shadow of the Past

As Cody continued to apply pressure to the stranger's shoulder, the man’s leather vest shifted. A worn leather wallet slipped from an inner pocket, landing open in the damp grass. Cody glanced down to retrieve it, but his hand froze mid-air. Tucked into the plastic sleeve was a faded, corner-creased photograph. It was a picture of a young woman with a radiant, unforgettable smile, standing in front of the local diner.

It was Cody’s mother, Sarah. And she was holding a tiny, newborn baby in her arms.

Cody’s breath hitched. He looked from the photo to the rugged face of the biker. The realization hit him like a physical blow. This man, with the name "Dallas" embroidered over his chest, was the father who had vanished from his life before he could even form a memory.

"Who are you?" Cody whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of shock and rising anger. "Why do you have a picture of my mother?"

Dallas closed his eyes for a brief second, a tear cutting through the grime on his cheek.

"I’m sorry, Cody," Dallas choked out. "I never wanted to leave. I had to keep you both safe from the life I was trapped in."

Before Cody could demand answers, the roar of approaching engines echoed through the misty canyon. Two heavy choppers tore through the fog, their headlights blinding. They screeched to a halt on the road above. Two men in matching leather jackets stepped off their bikes. One of them, a towering figure with a scar across his jaw, sneered down at the scene.

"Well, well, Dallas," the scarred man yelled, walking down the embankment. "Thought you could run from your debts? Step away from him, kid, if you know what's good for you."

Dallas struggled to rise, pushing Cody behind him. "Run, Cody. Please," he pleaded. But Cody stood his ground, looking at his injured father, then at the threat advancing through the mist.
