A Bitter Guard Accused A Navy Officer Of Stolen Valor Until A Sudden Announcement
Previously: When transit guard Arthur shoved a quiet man in a Navy uniform against a pillar, accusing him of stolen valor, he thought he was a hero. Then the PA system spoke.
A Ghost From the Past
The silence in the terminal was deafening. Arthur slowly lowered his hands, his face turning an ash-gray color. The crowd of onlookers whispered among themselves, their looks of curiosity turning into deep disapproval directed at the guard. Arthur stammered, trying to find the words to apologize, but his throat felt completely dry. He had let his bitter assumptions cloud his judgment, and now he faced the immediate end of his career, if not criminal charges.
But Marcus did not shout, nor did he call for the terminal police. Instead, he calmly adjusted his collar, his steady gaze locked onto Arthur's trembling eyes. When he spoke, his voice was low, carrying a weight that made Arthur's heart stop.

"You have no idea who I am, do you, Arthur?" Marcus asked softly.
Arthur stared, utterly bewildered. He had never met this man, yet Marcus knew his name. Before Arthur could speak, Marcus reached deep into his pocket and pulled out a worn, silver military-issue pocket watch. The casing was scratched, and the glass was cracked, but Arthur recognized it instantly. It was the watch his younger brother, Thomas, had carried when he deployed to the Middle East twenty years ago—the brother who had gone missing in action and was later declared dead.
"Thomas gave this to me," Marcus said, holding the watch out. "He told me that if I ever made it back, I needed to find his big brother and tell him the truth about what happened."
Tears welled in Arthur's eyes as the weight of the revelation crashed down on him. The man he had just assaulted, the man he had accused of wearing a fake uniform, was the very brother-in-arms who had survived alongside his beloved brother.
