Previously: When a nine-year-old girl bursts into a tense courtroom holding a pink voice recorder, a shocking family secret is exposed, turning a high-stakes murder trial completely upside down.

The Voice from the Grave

An uneasy silence fell over the courtroom. The pink recorder looked absurdly out of place in the solemn legal setting, yet it held the weight of a life sentence. Audrey’s lawyer immediately jumped to his feet, shouting objections about chain of custody and trial protocol, but Judge Frances raised a stern hand. She looked down at the brave little girl standing before her bench.

"Is that your toy, sweetheart?" Judge Frances asked gently.
"Yes, Your Honor," Lucy replied, wiping a tear from her cheek. "My dad bought it for me so I could record my songs. But he kept it on his desk. The night he died, he turned it on when Aunt Audrey came to visit."

Audrey’s face drained of all color. She took a step back, her eyes darting toward the courtroom exit, but two bailiffs quietly stepped into her path. Judge Frances ordered the bailiff to retrieve the device. The prosecutor tried to protest, but the judge silenced him with a sharp glare. "In the interest of justice, we will hear what is on this device," she declared.

The bailiff pressed the play button, and the courtroom speakers crackled to life. At first, there was only the sound of rustling papers. Then, Thomas’s familiar, warm voice filled the room, sending a shiver down Clara's spine.

"Audrey, please calm down," Thomas’s voice said. "I can't keep funding your gambling debts. I have a family to think about now. Clara and Lucy are my priority."
"You selfish bastard!" Audrey’s recorded voice shrieked back, dripping with venom. "I helped you build this company! You owe me!"
"I’ve given you millions, Audrey," Thomas sighed. "But it's over. I'm changing my will tomorrow. Clara will have full control."

On the recording, a glass clinked.

"Fine," Audrey’s voice said, suddenly turning cold and calm. "Have a drink to toast to your new life, brother."

Clara covered her mouth, a sob escaping her throat. The piece of evidence the police had used to frame her—the poisoned glass of whiskey—was being offered to Thomas by his own sister.
