Previously: When Lieutenant Clara Vance confronted her corrupt commander in front of the entire regiment, she knew the stakes were high—but she never expected the dangerous conspiracy that followed.

The Trap in the Dark

The cheers of the regiment faded quickly once Clara crossed the threshold of the auditorium doors. Waiting in the dim corridor was Arthur’s loyal security detail. Before she could secure the drive, heavy hands pinned her arms behind her back. She was dragged down into the cold, concrete depths of the base's holding facility and locked inside a windowless interrogation cell. Her drive was confiscated, and the heavy iron door slammed shut, leaving her in complete darkness.

An hour passed before the door opened again. Commander Arthur Pendelton walked in, nursing his bruised jaw with a cold compress. His silver hair was disheveled, and the spotless navy-blue uniform now looked disarrayed. He sneered at Clara, his voice dripping with venom.

Clara remained calm, leaning forward against the metal table. "The truth is already out, Arthur," she said quietly. "I didn't just bring that drive for show. The moment I stepped onto that stage, the files were automatically uploaded to the base's main server. Every terminal has them."

Arthur’s face contorted into a sinister smile. He pulled a secure smartphone from his pocket and tapped the screen, turning it toward Clara. Her breath caught in her throat. The screen displayed a live surveillance feed of a young military cadet at a remote training outpost. It was Leo, her younger brother.

"Your father was careless, Clara, and we saw how his story ended," Arthur whispered. "If you do not sign a confession stating you fabricated all the evidence against me, Leo will suffer a tragic accident before sunrise. The choice is yours."
