Previously: When Abigail shoved her wedding cake directly into her mother-in-law’s face and fled, the guests were horrified. But no one knew the devastating secret Susan had whispered just seconds before.

A Confrontation in the Shadows

Abigail ran blindly through the dark, manicured pathways of the estate, her heart hammering against her ribs. Tears hot with anger and sorrow blurred her vision as she finally collapsed onto a stone bench in a secluded garden. The distant sounds of the frantic reception faded, replaced by her own ragged breathing. She clutched her chest, mourning the beautiful lace veil her mother had hand-embroidered—the last physical connection she had to her past.

Within minutes, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed on the gravel. Abigail looked up to see Brandon, his face pale and eyes wide with confusion.

"Abigail! What on earth happened?" he gasped, rushing to her side. "Why did you do that to my mother? Everyone is in shock!"
Before Abigail could explain, the bushes parted. Susan marched into the clearing, flanked by two security guards and Courtney.

Susan’s mauve dress was stained with frosting, and her eyes burned with pure hatred.

"There she is!" Susan shrieked, pointing a trembling finger. "Arrest her! She is completely unhinged! Brandon, I want this woman out of our lives and behind bars!"

Abigail stood up, her voice trembling but resolute.

"She burned my mother's veil, Brandon! She admitted it to me right before we cut the cake. She threw it in the fire pit!"

Susan let out a dramatic, horrified gasp.

"That is a monstrous lie! I would never do such a thing! She is trying to deflect blame for her violent outburst. Brandon, you know me. I’ve done nothing but welcome this girl into our family!"
Brandon looked back and forth between his mother and his tear-stained bride, utterly torn. But then, Courtney stepped forward, holding a charred piece of white lace.
"Actually, Susan," Courtney said quietly, "I found this caught in the grates of the fire pit when I ran after Abigail. And I think we all need to look at it."

And I think we all need to look at it."
