Previously: When a traumatized soldier begs a stern prison warden for one last chance to rehabilitate a condemned military dog, a sudden crisis in the yard tests the animal's true loyalty.

The Tension in the Yard

The next three days were a grueling test of patience and trust. Thomas worked with Rex in a gated corner of the yard, away from the main inmate population. Step by step, Thomas used the old hand signals and soft, reassuring commands they had practiced in the military. Slowly, the rigid tension in Rex’s shoulders began to ease. The German Shepherd began to look less like a weapon and more like the loyal companion Thomas remembered. However, they were never truly alone. Dozens of hardened eyes watched them from the cellblock windows.

Among those watching was Miller, a notorious inmate who held immense influence over the prison yard. Miller despised Warden Marcus and saw the new dog program as a personal insult. On the fourth afternoon, the delicate peace shattered. A sudden, violent commotion erupted near the mess hall. Sirens wailed, and guards scrambled to contain a massive brawl that had broken out among the rival factions. In the chaos, the security perimeter around the yard weakened.

Seeing his opportunity, Miller and two of his associates slipped away from the main crowd. They cornered Warden Marcus near the concrete wall, far out of sight of the distracted guards. With a swift, brutal kick, Miller knocked Marcus’s cane away, sending the older man crashing to the dusty ground. Miller drew a crude, homemade shiv from his pocket, his eyes gleaming with malicious intent.

"Nobody is coming to save you now, old man," Miller sneered, raising the blade.

Fifty yards away, Thomas watched the horror unfold. Rex went completely rigid, a low, menacing growl vibrating deep in his chest. Thomas knew that if he let Rex go, the dog might be shot by the guards. But if he did nothing, the warden would die. With a racing heart, Thomas unclipped the leash.
