David forced himself to stay perfectly still. He closed his eyes, pretending to doze off as the train screeched to a halt at their Brooklyn station. He knew that if he confronted Marcus right there on the platform, his brother would immediately alert Sarah, and whatever financial trap they had set would spring shut. When they stepped out into the freezing night air, Marcus gave David a pat on the back.

He pulled out his phone and called Arthur, the company’s longtime forensic accountant and a trusted family friend. David explained what he had seen. Working through the night, Arthur discovered a horrifying truth: Marcus had forged David’s signature on a series of corporate documents, authorizing a massive offshore transfer of $450,000—the entirety of their business reserves and David's life savings—scheduled for exactly 8:00 AM.

"If that money leaves the country, David, you'll be completely bankrupt,"
