Previously: When a construction crew unearths a rusted school bus buried deep in a gloomy forest, a young laborer discovers a devastating truth that ties his own family to a decades-old town mystery.

Instead of dialing the authorities immediately, Matthew felt an overwhelming urge to look inside. The historical weight of the discovery pressed heavily upon him. Thirty years ago, a school bus carrying no passengers had vanished on its afternoon route. The driver, Arthur Pendelton, had been accused of stealing it before fleeing the state, leaving his family in ruin.

Matthew climbed down to the emergency exit at the rear of the bus. The metal handle was seized with decades of rust, but after several hard strikes with a crowbar, the latch finally gave way with a screeching groan. He stepped into the dark, damp interior.

The air inside was freezing and smelled of wet rust and mold. The passenger seats were empty, just as the reports had stated, but as Matthew made his way to the driver’s cabin, he noticed something resting on the dashboard. It was a small, heavy metal lockbox.

With a hard twist of his screwdriver, Matthew forced the lock open. Inside lay a leather-bound journal and a bundle of land deeds. He opened the journal to the last entry, dated the very day of the disappearance.

"They forced my hand," the faded handwriting read. "Vance said if I didn't hide the bus, my family would pay the price. He promised the deputy would help me disappear. I have no choice but to trust him."

Matthew’s breath hitched. The deputy mentioned in the journal was none other than his own father, Harold, who had later become the town's celebrated sheriff.

Suddenly, a shadow blocked the dim light filtering through the emergency door. Matthew turned to see James standing there, his face dark and unreadable. He wasn't holding his phone. Instead, he held a heavy iron wrench from the excavator's toolbox.

"Put the book back, Matthew," James said, his voice dangerously calm. "We are going to fill this hole back up, and we are going to forget we ever saw this."

Matthew stared at his brother, realizing with horror that James already knew the truth.
