I Caught My Husband Kissing My Best Friend in Our Driveway

The Real Inheritance
For a terrifying second, the room was dead silent. Jake and Maya looked at each other, their faces filled with genuine panic. But as I looked at their trembling hands, a strange detail clicked in my mind. If my father had been in debt to dangerous people, why would they knock so politely, and why would they call out his name at his daughter's house? I walked past my husband and my former best friend, ignoring their frantic whispers to stay back, and opened the door.
Standing on the porch was not a dangerous loan shark, but a man in a tailored suit holding a leather briefcase. Beside him stood two uniformed police officers. The man introduced himself as Arthur Pendelton, a federal investigator working alongside the executor of my father's actual estate. My father had not left a debt; he had left a highly lucrative trust fund, along with strict instructions that it only be released to me on my thirtieth birthday—which was next week.

The truth came crashing down like a tidal wave. Jake and Maya had discovered the existence of the trust a year ago. Maya, using her position at her father's law firm, had forged my signature on multiple documents to try and siphon the funds early. The "kiss" in the driveway wasn't a celebration of clearing a debt, but their excitement over what they thought was the final forged signature being approved. They had concocted the entire "dangerous debt" story on the spot when I caught them, hoping to scare me into signing over my rights to the safe-deposit box.
"Mr. and Mrs. Miller, you are both under arrest for grand larceny, forgery, and conspiracy," the officer stated, stepping into the foyer.
As the handcuffs clicked around Jake's and Maya's wrists, I felt no tears, only a profound sense of relief. The betrayal had cut deep, but the truth had set me free. I watched them get led down the driveway where they had kissed just an hour prior. I realized then that the greatest inheritance my father had left me wasn't the money, but the strength to walk away from those who never deserved my love.
