Ronan ordered his mother to leave immediately, warning her that if she ever came near Lily again, he would call the police. Martha sneered, packing her bags with an air of arrogant defiance. Before she walked out the door, she tossed a small brass key onto the kitchen counter.

"You think you are protecting your precious family, Ronan," Martha spat. "But you are living a lie. Open the wooden chest in my closet if you want to know who your late wife really was."

After soothing Lily and cleaning the cut on her forehead, Ronan put his daughter to bed. Once she was asleep, he walked into the guest room his mother had occupied. His hands shook as he opened the closet and found the heavy wooden chest. He inserted the brass key and turned it. The lock clicked open.

Inside lay a collection of old photographs, medical records, and letters. Ronan’s breath caught in his throat as he pulled out a photograph of his late wife, Chloe. She was smiling warmly, standing next to Ronan's deceased older brother, Justin. In Chloe's arms was a newborn baby. Attached to the photo was a DNA paternity test from nine years ago.

With trembling fingers, Ronan unfolded the document. The paper stated that there was a zero percent probability of paternity between Ronan and Lily. Instead, the document listed Justin as the biological father. Ronan felt the world spinning around him. Had his wife and his brother betrayed him? Was Lily not his daughter, but his niece?

He remembered how Martha had always hated Chloe, and how she had treated Lily with a strange, cold resentment. If this document was real, it changed everything.
