Previously: When Rebecca took her son Theodore for a walk, she never expected to run into his mirror image begging on the street—holding a locket that changed everything.

The Secret in the Clinic

Desperation and maternal instinct took over Rebecca. She couldn't leave Eli on the freezing street. She guided both boys to her car, her hands shaking so violently she could barely insert the key into the ignition. In the backseat, Theodore and Eli sat in stunned silence, staring at one another as if looking into a portal to another life. Rebecca drove straight to the fertility clinic where her husband, Julian, worked as a chief specialist.

Julian had always been a respected man, the savior who had helped them conceive Theodore after years of heartbreaking infertility. But as Rebecca marched into his private office, holding both boys by the hand, the color drained instantly from Julian's face. He stood up slowly behind his heavy mahogany desk, his eyes darting frantically between Theodore, Eli, and the gold locket Rebecca slammed onto the wood.

"Rebecca, what is the meaning of this?" Julian stammered, his professional composure crumbling. "Who is this child?"

"You know exactly who he is, Julian!" Rebecca cried, her voice cracking with pure agony. "He has Theodore's face! He has the newborn photos from our private files! Explain this to me right now!"

Julian stepped back, his hands trembling. He began to spin a web of lies, claiming there had been a mix-up at the lab, that Eli must have been an embryo they thought was non-viable. But before he could finish his desperate explanation, Rebecca's phone rang. It was an unknown number. When she answered, a weak, raspy voice spoke from the other end.

"Is this Rebecca?" the woman gasped. "My name is Martha. I was Julian's head nurse seven years ago. I am dying in the city hospital, and I cannot take this secret to my grave. Julian didn't lose your second twin. He sold him to pay off his massive gambling debts, and I helped him cover it up. Eli is your son."

Rebecca stared at Julian, horror washing over her. The man she loved was a monster who had sold their own flesh and blood.
