Previously: When 69-year-old Madeline entered the shooting range, a young competitor mocked her age. But when she signed the registration form, an official recognized her name and uncovered a legendary secret.

The Ghost of the Range

Alistair’s hands shook as he held the registration paper. The name written in elegant, cursive ink was Madeline Vance. Thirty years ago, that name was whispered in hushed, reverent tones across the international shooting circuit. She was "The Ghost," a marksman who had never missed a target, until a sudden doping scandal shattered her career on the eve of the Olympics. She had vanished into obscurity, leaving behind a legacy tainted by accusations she could never disprove.

"Madeline... it really is you,"
Alistair breathed, his voice filled with a mixture of awe and deep regret. He had been a young range officer when she was banned, and he had always suspected she was set up. Levi pushed his way to the front of the crowd, his face flushed with embarrassment.
"Who cares who she is? She's ancient history! She can't just walk in here and take a spot in the qualifiers!"
he demanded.

Before Alistair could answer, a booming voice echoed through the lobby.

"She certainly cannot,"
said Richard, the head coach of the elite Vanguard Academy. Richard was a powerful man in his late sixties, and as he stepped into the light, Madeline felt a familiar coldness grip her chest. Richard had been her teammate thirty years ago—the very man who had inherited her spot on the Olympic team after her ban.

Richard stared at Madeline, his eyes dark with malice.

"The Vanguard Academy will not permit a disgraced athlete to mock this tournament. Your lifetime ban is absolute, Madeline,"
he sneered. But Madeline stood tall, her voice slicing through the tense silence.
"The ban was for thirty years, Richard. It expired yesterday. I checked the bylaws, and so did my lawyers."
Richard’s face paled. He knew that if Madeline competed and won, the spotlight would return to her, and the truth of how he had framed her thirty years ago to secure his own glory would finally be exposed.
