Previously: When Commander David ordered Officer Megan to remove her military jacket in front of the entire unit, he expected a minor infraction. Instead, a hidden wolf tattoo on her collarbone changed everything.

Secrets in the Dust

Before Megan could answer, Commander David barked a harsh order, dismissing the rest of the formation. The troops dispersed quickly, whispering among themselves about the unprecedented confrontation. David gestured sharply for Megan to follow him into the command tent. Inside, the shadow offered temporary relief from the blinding sun, but the atmosphere remained suffocatingly tense.

David paced back and forth, his boots kicking up small puffs of dust from the rugged floor. Finally, he turned to face her, his hands balled into tight fists.

"Where did you get that design, Officer? Who gave you permission to wear that emblem?" David demanded, his voice low and dangerous. "That is not a standard military tattoo. That is a highly specific, custom design."

Megan took a deep breath, trying to maintain her composure. "With respect, sir, it's a personal tattoo. It has nothing to do with my service. It's the only thing I have left of my father."

David let out a harsh, cynical laugh. "Your father? Don't lie to me, Officer. That design was hand-drawn by my younger brother, Caleb. He was a special ops specialist who went missing in action fifteen years ago. No one else had that sketch. It was meant for his unborn daughter, whom we lost track of after his wife passed away in foster care. You are standing there wearing a fallen hero's legacy. Explain yourself, or I will have you court-martialed for fraud!"

Megan felt the ground shift beneath her feet. The puzzle pieces of her life, scattered for over two decades, suddenly rushed together in a terrifying, beautiful moment. With trembling fingers, she reached into her inner pocket and pulled out a small, laminated photograph. On the back was a faded pencil sketch of the exact same wolf, accompanied by a short note written in elegant handwriting.

She handed it to the commander. "I am not a fraud, sir. I was adopted out of the state foster system when I was five. This is the only photograph I have of my biological father."
