Previously: When tactical officer Ashley confronted her commander on the tarmac, she expected a routine dispute. Instead, she uncovered a web of lies that linked him to her husband's tragic death.

A Web of Dark Secrets

Richard lay on the wet ground, breathing heavily. He didn't look like a corrupt officer trying to escape justice; he looked like a broken man who had run out of options. Ashley kept her weapon trained on him, her mind screaming for answers. The silence between them was deafening, punctuated only by the distant hum of the fighter jet's engine.

"You think I wanted David dead?" Richard whispered, his voice trembling with a raw emotion that shook Ashley to her core. "He was like a son to me, Ashley. I loved him."

"Then why did you falsify the maintenance records?" Ashley demanded, her hands shaking as she fought to keep her aim steady. "You covered up the engine failure! You let the company off the hook while my husband burned in a wreckage!"

Richard shook his head, tears finally spilling over his weathered cheeks. "It wasn't an engine failure, Ashley. David discovered a highly organized smuggling syndicate operating right here inside our own supply lines. They are stealing military-grade technology and selling it on the black market."

Ashley’s heart skipped a beat. She stared at him, trying to process the words. "What are you talking about?"

"David was going to expose them," Richard explained, looking around the tarmac in sheer panic. "They found out. They sabotaged his jet to silence him. And then, they came after me. They told me that if I didn't declare it a routine mechanical failure and sign off on the fake logs, you would be their next target. I did it to save your life, Ashley!"

Before Ashley could respond, a tiny, piercing red light caught her eye. It danced across the damp fabric of Richard’s dark blue uniform, settling directly over his heart. Ashley’s blood ran cold. She slowly turned her head, looking toward the dark perimeter of the hangar. A black SUV was parked in the shadows, and through the cracked window, the barrel of a sniper rifle gleamed in the dim light. The red dot suddenly flickered, leaving Richard’s chest, and drifted upward—stopping right between Ashley’s eyes.
