Previously: When a corrupt officer tried to publicly humiliate Clara by shaving her head, he thought he had won. But he had no idea who she really was—or who was watching.

The dust kicked up by the heavy armored SUVs slowly settled, revealing a dozen armed federal marshals who quickly moved to secure the perimeter. From the lead vehicle stepped General Vance, the head of military intelligence and a legendary figure within the department. His presence alone was enough to make the guards lower their weapons in respect.

The Confrontation

Thomas, realizing his plan was slipping away, tried to regain control of the situation. He stepped forward, forcing a smile and offering a crisp, albeit trembling, salute to the arriving general.

"General Vance! Thank God you've arrived," Thomas lied, his voice strained. "We just caught this operative attempting to steal highly classified defense files. I was in the middle of administering emergency field discipline."

General Vance didn't return the salute. He walked past Thomas as if the man were invisible, his eyes fixed on Clara’s bound hands and bruised wrists. The cold fury in the elder officer's eyes was palpable.

"Is this how we treat our finest undercover investigators, Thomas?" General Vance asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

Thomas gasped, his face turning an ashen gray. "Undercover? Sir, she is a rogue agent! I have the evidence on a flash drive in my pocket!"

General Vance pulled a tablet from his aide's hands. "The files on that drive were planted by you, Thomas. We have been tracking your black-market transactions for six months. We knew you were selling our tech to foreign syndicates, and we knew you were trying to frame Clara to cover your tracks."

Realizing his career, and his life, were over, Thomas snapped. In a desperate, frantic move, he drew his sidearm and grabbed Clara, pulling her back against his chest and pressing the cold barrel of the pistol to her temple.

"Back off! All of you!" Thomas screamed, his eyes wild with terror. "If anyone moves, she dies right here!"
