A Corrupt Cop Targeted a Defenseless Old Man, Unaware of His Real Identity
Previously: When Officer Carter pulled over an older man on an isolated highway and tried to extort him, he thought it was an easy score. He had no idea who he was dealing with.
The mockery in Officer Carter’s voice quickly turned into blatant hostility. He walked over to the driver’s side of the tan sedan, pretending to conduct a routine search. Thomas watched him through the dusty glass, remaining perfectly still. With a smooth, practiced motion, Carter reached into his tactical vest, pulled out a small plastic baggie containing a white powdery substance, and held it up triumphantly.
He walked back to Thomas, dangling the fabricated evidence in front of the older man's face. His smile was predatory, the expression of a man who believed he was completely untouchable on this stretch of highway.

The Price of Freedom
"Look what we have here," Carter sneered, leaning in close. "This is enough felony possession to put you away for a decade, Thomas. But I'm a reasonable man. We can make this whole nightmare disappear right now."
Thomas stared at the planted baggie, his expression unchanged. He knew exactly what Carter was doing; it was the same extortion tactic that had ruined dozens of innocent lives over the past year. Thomas deliberately lowered his voice, playing the role of a desperate, defeated victim to draw out the final confession.
"What do you want from me?" Thomas asked, sounding vulnerable. "I don't have much."
"There is an ATM at the rest stop three miles back," Carter whispered, keeping his eyes on the empty road. "You walk over there, withdraw five thousand dollars in cash, leave it in my patrol unit, and you can drive away. If not, you go to county jail, and I'll make sure you never see the light of day again."
Before Thomas could answer, the distant, low wail of sirens began to echo across the desert. Carter’s smirk vanished instantly. Within seconds, three unmarked black SUVs and two state trooper cruisers roared down the highway, surrounding them in a cloud of dust. Armed tactical officers surged out of the vehicles, their weapons drawn, pointing them directly at a stunned Officer Carter.
