Previously: When Clara's corrupt ex-husband tried to ruin her life and steal her daughter, she had one shot to prove her worth and she was not about to miss.

The Shadow of the Law

By the time the seventh casing hit the table, the entire range was dead silent. Every single target downrange was spinning, struck dead center. Jack stared at the results, then turned to Clara, a newfound respect burning in his eyes. He motioned for her to follow him into the range's private office, away from the whispering crowd.

"You're one of the best shooters I've ever seen, Clara," Jack said, closing the heavy wooden door. "But your presence here is a massive problem."

Clara frowned, her defensive walls immediately going up. "I passed the test, Jack. You have to sign my certification."

Jack sighed, taking off his cap and rubbing his face. "It's not about your skill. Yesterday, I got a call from Sheriff Sean Miller. Your ex-husband. He offered me ten thousand dollars to make sure you failed today. He told me you were a dangerous felon who shouldn't be allowed near a weapon."

A cold wave of anger washed over Clara. Sean had already taken her badge, her reputation, and her daughter. Now, he was trying to choke off her last remaining path to a legitimate career. Before she could speak, the screech of tires echoed outside the office. Through the dusty window, Clara saw a marked sheriff's SUV slide to a halt, kicking up a massive cloud of sand.

Sean stepped out of the vehicle, looking immaculate in his tailored uniform, flanked by two armed deputies. He marched straight into the office, his face twisted into a triumphant, arrogant sneer.

"Well, well. Look what we have here," Sean said, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "Clara, you're violating your restraining order just by being in this county. You're coming with me."

The two deputies stepped forward, their hands resting ominously on their sidearms. Clara backed up against the wall, her heart hammering. She looked at Jack, but the instructor stood still, seemingly unwilling to interfere with local law enforcement. It seemed Sean had won once again, ready to lock her away where she could never fight for her daughter.
