The diner doors burst open, and four heavily armed federal agents entered, followed closely by a high-ranking military officer in a crisp uniform. It was Colonel Miller, General Vance’s chief of staff. He looked at Robert with utter disdain.

"Sheriff Robert, step away from the Sergeant," Colonel Miller ordered, his voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls.

Robert’s face drained of color. He slowly raised his hands, stepping back from Emily and Max.

"This is a local matter," Robert stammered, trying to regain his composure. "She was resisting arrest and harboring an aggressive animal."

Colonel Miller walked forward, handing Robert a federal warrant.

"Actually, Sheriff, you are the one under arrest. This warrant is for federal corruption, bribery, and civil rights violations. And as for the 'aggressive animal,' that K9 is a decorated military hero who has saved more lives than you have ever protected."
