Previously: Lieutenant Amanda Vance faced a court-martial when she drew her weapon on Captain James Sterling, but she was about to uncover a conspiracy that went all the way to the top.

A Deadly Revelation

Amanda kept her weapon leveled at Captain Sterling, refusing to let her guard down despite the history they shared. For years, Sterling had been a mentor to her, a surrogate father after her own father, Admiral Vance, had passed away. To find his signature on the fraudulent manifests for compromised military gear had broken something inside her.

"Why did you do it, James?" Amanda demanded, her voice cracking. "The faulty equipment cost three soldiers their lives. My father would have despised what you've become."

Sterling slowly rose to his feet, keeping his hands visible. He brushed the dirt from his dark blue trousers and looked directly into her eyes, his expression grave.

"Amanda, look at the signatures again," James said softly. "The encrypted clearance codes didn't originate from my office. They came from a secure terminal in Washington. A terminal that belonged to your father."

Amanda stared at him, stunned. "That's a lie," she whispered. "My father died three years ago. He had nothing to do with this!"

James shook his head, pulling a small, encrypted data drive from his inner jacket pocket. He held it out to her, his hand steady.

"Your father discovered the conspiracy, Amanda. He was trying to shut it down, but they killed him and made it look like a training accident. Now, they are using his digital ghost to authorize these shipments—and they used my name to lure you here. They knew you would come after me."

Before Amanda could process the devastating news, a low rumble vibrated through the tarmac. Three unmarked, blacked-out helicopters emerged from the gloomy clouds, descending rapidly toward their position. These were not military police. They were private mercenaries hired to silence anyone who knew the truth.
