Previously: Ten years after a tragic summer night on the Gulf Coast boardwalk, Daniel finds Nicole holding the exact same crimson sweatshirt—and a secret that changes everything.

Reclaiming Our Future

Before I could even process the shocking news of our daughter, a loud screech of tires shattered the seaside tranquility. A heavy black SUV pulled up to the edge of the boardwalk, and a man with cold, calculating eyes stepped out. It was Nicole’s father, Arthur. He looked older, his face hardened by years of bitterness, but the malice in his gaze was unmistakable. He marched toward us, his hands clenched into fists.

"Nicole! Get away from him," Arthur bellowed, his voice cutting through the peaceful sounds of the ocean. "I told you what would happen if you ever tried to dig up the past."

But I was no longer the helpless teenager he had intimidated ten years ago. I stepped firmly in front of Nicole, shielding her from his advance. "It’s over, Arthur," I said, my voice steady and deadly calm. "I know everything. And this time, you have no leverage."

Arthur sneered, pulling out his phone. "I can still ruin your father, boy. One call, and the old police files get reopened." Just then, another figure stepped out of the passenger side of the SUV. It was a young girl with bright green eyes and curly brown hair, clutching a small sketchbook. She looked so much like Nicole, but she had my smile. Lily.

Seeing his granddaughter watch him with fear in her eyes, Arthur froze. In that moment of hesitation, the local sheriff's car pulled up behind his SUV, sirens silent but lights flashing. I had called my uncle, the retired deputy, the moment my sister told me Nicole was in town; he had spent the last hour pulling up the old digital files that proved Arthur's embezzlement. The truth was finally out, and Arthur had nowhere left to run.

As the deputies led a silent Arthur away, Nicole collapsed into my arms, the faded crimson sweatshirt sandwiched between us. Lily walked up to us shyly, and we knelt down to embrace our daughter together for the very first time. True love never truly fades; it only waits for the tide to turn and bring us back home.

The End
