Previously: When ten-year-old Grace was left standing alone at her school's father-daughter dance, she thought her dad had abandoned her. She had no idea of the dark betrayal that kept him away.

The Sabotage

What Grace did not know was that her father, David, was currently fighting the battle of his life just a few miles away. David had spent months preparing for this night, determined to give Grace the perfect memory. However, his ex-wife, Clara, had a far darker agenda. Driven by bitterness and a desire to win sole custody of Grace to move her across the country, Clara had devised a cruel plan to paint David as an unreliable, neglectful parent in the eyes of the court.

When David had arrived home from his shift to get dressed, he was met with a nightmare. His only good suit had been slashed to ribbons, and a mocking note left on his counter made it clear that Clara’s influence was behind it. Panic-stricken, David rushed to his car, only to find the hood slightly ajar. The spark plug wires had been cleanly severed. Clara had orchestrated a perfect trap, ensuring he would have no way to reach the school on time.

He sprinted out of his apartment complex and onto the busy streets, wearing only his work jeans and a plain t-shirt. Within minutes, a sudden autumn downpour began, drenching him to the bone. The rain turned the dirt paths into slick mud, causing David to lose his footing and tumble down a steep embankment near the highway.

He crashed into the gravel, scraping his knees and hands, and bruising his face against the earth. Gasping for air, covered in black grime and blood, David forced himself back onto his feet. The physical pain was nothing compared to the agonizing thought of Grace standing alone in her lavender dress. He pushed through the exhaustion, his heart hammering against his ribs, running the remaining miles through the freezing storm, driven by pure fatherly love.
