Previously: When baby Leo's heart stopped in the NICU, doctors told Laura and Robert to prepare for the worst. But their seven-year-old son, Ethan, refused to let go of his baby brother.

The Secret in the Blood

The miracle of Leo’s survival quickly became the talk of the hospital, but for Laura, the relief was short-lived. The next morning, Dr. Bennett called Laura and Robert into his private office. He looked bewildered, staring at a stack of medical charts with a furrowed brow. He explained that Leo’s recovery defied all medical science, showing zero signs of brain damage despite the prolonged lack of oxygen.

However, the doctor's expression soon shifted from wonder to deep concern. He slid a folder across the desk toward Robert.

"During the emergency resuscitation, we had to run extensive genetic and blood profiling to understand the sudden arrest,"
Dr. Bennett explained slowly.
"We found something highly unusual. It is genetically impossible for Leo to have inherited certain markers from you, Robert. In short, you are not his biological father."

The words hung in the sterile air like a guillotine. Robert froze, the color draining from his face as he stared at the medical documents. He slowly turned his head to look at Laura, his eyes burning with a mixture of confusion, shock, and rapidly rising anger. Laura felt her throat tighten, a suffocating wave of guilt washing over her. The secret she had buried deep in her past was finally coming to light.

Years ago, during a brief, painful separation in their marriage when Robert had walked out on her, Laura had found comfort in the arms of another man. It was a single, regretful night that she had tried to forget once she and Robert reconciled. When she discovered she was pregnant, the timeline was so close that she had desperately convinced herself the baby was Robert’s.

"Laura, what is this?"
Robert demanded, his voice trembling with a dangerous quietness.
"Is this a mistake? Tell me this is a mistake!"
Laura couldn't speak; her tearful silence was all the confirmation he needed. In the middle of the hospital hallway, just steps away from their recovering newborn, their marriage began to implode.
