Previously: Stephanie and Justin’s beautiful military wedding seemed like a fairytale. But right after the ceremony, a mysterious black envelope from Justin's past threatened to shatter their future forever.

The Black Envelope

I retreated to the quiet sanctuary of the church vestry, my hands trembling as I tore open the thick black paper. Inside were two documents that made my heart stop. The first was a birth certificate for a five-year-old girl named Lily. The second was a DNA paternity test, listing my newly wedded husband, Justin, as the biological father with a 99.9% probability. The mother was Charlotte, Justin’s wealthy socialite ex-fiancée—the woman Margaret had always wanted him to marry.

My breath caught in my throat. Justin had told me his relationship with Charlotte ended mutually years ago, long before we met. He had never mentioned a child. Tears blurred my eyes, threatening to ruin my wedding makeup. Just then, the door swung open and Justin walked in, his face filled with concern. When he saw the state I was in, his smile faded instantly.

"Stephanie, what's wrong? Why did you run away from the reception?" he asked, stepping toward me.

I couldn't speak. I simply handed him the papers. I watched his face turn from confusion to sheer, unadulterated shock as he read the names. Before he could explain, the vestry door opened again. Margaret walked in, but she wasn't alone. Behind her stood Charlotte, holding the hand of a little girl who possessed Justin’s unmistakable bright blue eyes and stubborn chin.

"He knew, Stephanie," Margaret announced triumphantly. "He abandoned his own daughter to play hero in the sky, and then he found you to escape his past."

I felt my world crumbling. The evidence was right in front of me. But Justin didn't panic. Instead, his military training kicked in. His eyes narrowed as he stared intensely at the DNA document. He looked at the date, then at the laboratory seal at the bottom. Suddenly, a cold, hard smile spread across his face as he looked up at his mother.

"You almost had me, Mother," Justin said, his voice dangerously calm. "But you forgot one very important detail."
